AA4CC team ranked 5th at 2013 IEEE RAS Mobile Microrobotics Challenge in Karlsruhe

Doctoral candidate Jiří Zemánek and three (under)graduate students - Jakub Drs, Tomáš Michálek and Jakub Tomášek, all from the AA4CC team coordinated by Dr. Zdeněk Hurák have qualified and participated at a prestigious international microrobotics competition called IEEE RAS Microrobotics Challenge in Karlsruhe, May 6-10, 2013. They ranked 5th in a tough competition of teams from first-class institutes such CNRS, Carnegie Mellon, University of Texas at Arlington or University of Waterloo.

Dr. Levent Ucun (Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey) has finished his 6-month visiting position with aa4cc group

On Thursday, February 28, 2013 we said good bye to our recent colleague and a new friend - Dr. Levent Ucun from Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul, Turkey. Levent left Prague for Istanbul after a six-month visiting positiion at our group. Levent not only helped us make a significant progress with application of advanced techniques for modeling and compensation of friction in our low-velocity motion control application, but he also contributed a lot to a good mood at our lab. Good luck with your next career and life, Levent. Keep in touch!

Jakub Drs awarded by Hlávka Foundation

Our graduate student Jakub Drs was awarded a prestigious prize for the best students of Prague universities by Hlávka Foundation. He was nominated for his final-year undegraduate project supervised by Jiri Zemanek. Within his project he joined the team of other students in preparation of our participation at the international 2012 NIST Mobile Microrobotics Challenge.

Congratulations to Otakar Šprdlík for successful defense of his doctoral thesis!

Tuesday, October 2, Zdeněk Hurák and Jiří Zemánek visited the top reserchers in the field of electrokinetics at the University of Southampton, namely Prof. Hywel Morgan and Prof. Nicolas Green, and presented their work to them and their colleagues and students through a lecture on "Distributed parallel (micro)manipulation by shaping force fields: algorithms and experiments with dielectrophoresis".

Paper published in IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology

The paper authored by Zdeněk Hurák and Martin Řezáč deals with adaptation of visual servoing concepts to an inertially stabilized double-gimbal platform. The paper will appear in the September issue. Online version is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TCST.2011.2164541.

AA4CC members participated at 2012 American Control Conference

The 2012 ACC conference was held June 27 through 29 in Montréal, Canada. Jiří and Zdeněk actively participated with their joint paper on ""Feedback linearization approach to distributed feedback manipulation." Jiří was awarded the "Best presentation in a section" minor award.

12 selected students have just started their summer research internships in AA4CC and 1 in a partner institution - LMS International in Leuven, Belgium

They will work on their projects till the beginning of the next semestr, that is, in total about 2 and a half months. Their progress will be documented on personal blogs. Namely

Josef Muller started his summer internship at LMS International in Leuven, Belgium

One of graduate students who just started collaborating with our group - Josef Muller - has grasped the opportunity that we arranged for our students and he will spend three months in the summer 2012 as an intern at LMS International in historical city of Leuven, close to Brussels, Belgium. Josef will work on several issues related to state estimation in automotive systems and/or flexible structures.

Three graduate students from AA4CC defended their theses and passed the final state exams

On Thursday, June 7, three graduate students from AA4CC group - Dan Martinec, Jan Salášek and Ondřej Mikulín - successfully defended their theses and passed the final state exams. Dan was graded A both for the defense and the exam and earned the "summa cum laude" degree. Jan was graded A for the defense and B for the exam. Ondřej earned A for the defense and B for the exam. Congratulations to all the three excellent students! 

Summer research internships for students at AA4CC

Tomáš Haniš successfuly defended his doctoral thesis

Congratulations to Dr. Tomáš Haniš! The defense of his thesis on "Active control for high capacity flexible aircraft" was attended by many members of the department and the group. Presence of a reviewer from abroad - Prof. Martin Kozek from TU Wien - raised the event into a somewhat international level. Presence of other reviewers - Prof. M. Schlegel from University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and Prof. Z. Šika from CTU in Prague and other experienced committee members such as Prof. Vladimír Kučera kept the defense at some pace and "temperature".

Two or our graduate students were awarded at KONTAKT 2012

Graduate students Jan Salášek and Dan Martinec from AA4CC were awarded prizes for the best and the second best thesis, respectively, at KONTAKT 2012. Dan took an extra prize for the best thesis in the domain of embedded automation and control. The event took place on Thursday, May 24 at Department of Control Engineering, FEE CTU in Prague. Their competitors were other graduates of the year from the department (in total 20 graduates).

Our team ranked 4th at  NIST Mobile Microrobotics Challenge 2012, which took place during 2012 ICRA (IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation) in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, May 14-18, 2012. The total number of competitors who qualified for the event was nine. Namely, the undergraduate student Jakub Drs and Dr. Zdeněk Hurák attended the event.

Nobel laureate Prof. Sheldon Glashow visited the AA4CC lab

On Friday, May 11, 2011, within his two-day visit to Czech Technical University in Prague organized by Honeywell, the 1979 Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Sheldon Glashow visited our lab. We had an opportunity to proudly demonstrate our work in distributed manipulation, in particular our recent achievements in dielectrophoresis-based micromanipulation, and have a short chat.

Namely, the undergraduate student Jakub Drs and Dr. Zdeněk Hurák are attending the event.

AA4CC moved to new offices and labs

Since the second week of March, the majority of the AA4CC group has bee located in a different place. The rooms S136 and S137 in the basement have been left for the new rooms K8 and K11. The rooms S133 and S134 have been left for the room K9.

These new rooms can be found on the ground floor, the right wing of the building E.

Inertially stabilized camera platform on Czech TV

Jarda, Martin and Zdenek as TV stars in the popular PORT magazine  on Channel 2 of Czech TV on Friday, February 17, at 16:25. This time dedicated to the project of inertially stabilized aerial camera platform in which we are participating.

"Harum Scarum Printers" video on Youtube becoming widely popular and cited by media :-)

As a creative joke during a Christmass party at the Department of Control Engineering FEE CTU in Prague, in December 2009, two members of AA4CC - Jiří Zemánek and Jaroslav Žoha - prepared the funny show called "Harum Scarum Printers". Worn-out dot matrix printers were programmed to play a Czech Christmas carol called „Nesem vam noviny. The sound was generated purely by the print head pins and the stepper motors, no additional sound sample or effect was used.

AA4CC group is one of the partners in the awarded GACR CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Researchers from AA4CC group (lead by Zdeněk Hurák) together with researchers from Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republics (group lead by Dr. František Foret) and Department of Biochemistry of Masaryk University in Brno (group lead by Prof. Zdeněk Glatz) succeeded in getting a prestigious granf from Grant Agency of the Czech Republic of the Centre of Excellence type.The name of this strongly multidisciplinary project is "Centre for advanced bioanalytical technologies".

CTU in Prague awarded for the best exposition at Gaudeamus 2011 exhibition

CTU in Prague won the 1st price for the best exposition during the 5th Central European Study Abroad Exibition Gaudeamus 2011. Faculty of Electrical Engineering prepared a demonstration of an interactive touchscreen, a robotic arm driven using Microsoft Kinect and an ensemble of Lego robots “tamed” by Jiří Zemánek (AA4CC) and Martin Samek, both from Department of Control Engineering.

AA4CC visiting several research labs at the US universities and Honeywell

Zdeněk Hurák, Martin Řezáč and Jirka Zemánek from AA4CC attended the 2011 IEEE Multiconference on Systems and Control (MSC) in Denver, CO, USA in late September. Then they set our for a two-week tour around three US universities, namely University of Texas in Arlington, University of California in Santa Barbara and University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

European patent granted to Tomáš Haniš

Tomáš was a visiting researcher in EADS in Munich for 6 months in 2010. During this stay he worked together with Dr. Andreas Wildschek on computational design of open-loop controllers for gust load alleviation for a large blended wing body ariliner. Their work based on use of advanced numerical optimization was succesfully filed as a European patent number 11175857.9-1239. The patent is owned by EADS.

Fall semester 2011 started with the first lecture on "Modeling..."

We struggled to find the most proper definition of modeling in the first lecture within the new undergraduate course on Modeling and simulation of dynamic system. And we had quite some fun... :-)
